Prior to the advent of PCBs, the interconnections between electronic components were made by directly connecting electrical wires. To simplify wiring, people printed circuit patterns on the substrates and formed pathways through copper plating. As a result, printed circuit boards came into being. Has now developed into a cornerstone of the electronic information industry.
One of the distinguishing features of the PCB is its extensive coverage of downstream applications covering communications, computers, aerospace, industrial control medical, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics. Among them, communications, computers and consumer electronics have become the three major application areas of PCB.
With the continuous development of the electronic information industry, we believe that the application of PCB in the future will be further deepened and extended.
Due to the wide audience area, the PCB industry is less affected by the downstream single industry, which is mainly reflected by the macroeconomic fluctuations and the overall development of the electronic information industry.
From the perspective of changes in the product structure of the global PCB market, according to Prismark’s statistics, the current level of PCBs still dominates the market, accounting for 38.85% in 2016. In addition, as the integrated functions of the components become more and more extensive, the high density requirements of electronic products on the PCB are more prominent, and high-end products such as multilayer boards, flexible boards, HDI boards, and package substrates dominate the development direction of PCB products.
At present, there are approximately 2,800 PCB companies in the world, which are mainly concentrated in China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, the United States, and Europe. From the perspective of industrial technology, Japan, the United States, South Korea and Taiwan still lead the world. Japanese companies’ products are concentrated in high-end products such as high-end HDI boards, package substrates, and high-level flexible boards; the products of American companies are mainly high-end multi-layer boards used in military, aerospace, and communications; products of South Korean and Taiwanese companies Also based on the higher value of the package substrate and HDI board. Since the 21st century, the global PCB industry has gradually shifted its focus to Asia, forming a new pattern centered on Asia (especially China) and supplemented by other regions.
From 2008 to 2016, the global share of China’s PCB industry’s production value steadily increased, reaching 50.04% in 2016, and the status of PCB’s largest producer continues to grow. From the perspective of production capacity, from 2008 to 2016, China’s PCB industry output value increased from US$15.037 billion to US$27.123 billion, and its annual compound growth rate was as high as 7.65%, which was much higher than the global compound growth rate of 1.47%.
The main reasons for the transfer of the PCB industry to the mainland are: low labor costs, relatively relaxed environmental protection supervision, and rapid development of downstream markets.
